According to Islamic law, Halal is a term designating any object or action which is permissible to use or engage in. It is the opposite of haraam (harmfull).

Islam has laws (enshrined in the Quran and the Sunna) regarding which food can and cannot be eaten. A variety of substances are considered as harmful for humans to consume and are, therefore, forbidden as for example pork, blood and alcohol. The term halal is used to designate food seen as permissible according to Islamic law.

Not only the ingredients but also the whole process of producing, including the cleaning method, need to be approved before the product itself can be certificated as halal.

Independent institutions control each year the producer and his products along strict international criteria and guarantee that a certificated product corresponds to the rules of the Quran.
